Gurugram: Repair works are still being undertaken at the IFFCO Chowk underpass even as it was opened for the traffic on Saturday evening. Due to Friday rains, a part of the underpass had caved in leading to the NHAI to close the underpass for more than 24 hours.Officials of the NHAI said that most of the repairs were completed by Saturday morning by clearing the high deposition of slush had become a time-consuming hindrance, which delayed the opening of the underpass. Also Read – After eight years, businessman arrested for kidnap & murderNHAI officials explained that ‘extension joints’ are essentially the attachment of the concrete wall of the underpass and its boundary wall, to support the structure. Gaps in the extension joints on Friday had resulted in large amounts of rainwater entering the underpass. A stiffener is similar to a metallic bolt, holding the two structures together, they said. With the underpass being located in a low-lying area, NHAI officials also said that it remains vulnerable to flooding whenever there is heavy rain. Also Read – Two brothers held for snatchingsThere have been various occasions due to heavy rains the IFFCO Chowk underpass has been completely inundated. The incident of inundation of the underpass first came in 2018 when the underpass was being constructed. That time it had been highlighted that how massive amount of water stored could weaken the structure. Friday rains once again exposed the quality of construction in the city. Inaugurated in the month of April this year, the public officials from NHAI as well as Gurugram agencies were left in an embarrassing position again when MG Road underpass developed cracks and a portion of it collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
TORONTO – The turmoil continued at Ontario’s Progressive Conservative party on Sunday, with party president Rick Dykstra announcing his resignation just hours after a major internal shakeup was revealed. In a post on his verified Twitter account Sunday evening, Dykstra announced he’s stepping down after nearly two years in the position. His resignation also followed that of Patrick Brown, who quit as party leader last week amid allegations of sexual misconduct.“It has been a wonderful experience to watch the party’s renewal,” wrote Dykstra Sunday night. “And over the next couple of months, we will see the party coalesce around a new leader.”It will have to coalesce quickly. The Tories had been widely favoured to unseat Premier Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals in a provincial election set for June — but that was before Brown’s departure and the upheaval that followed.Dykstra’s resignation came on the same day of a major shakeup that included two key staff members returning to jobs they had quit just days earlier.Chief of Staff Alykhan Velshi and communications director Nick Bergamini were among four key party members who resigned Wednesday night, just minutes before CTV News aired graphic allegations made against Brown by two women. The allegations have not been independently verified by The Canadian Press, and Brown has said they are “categorically untrue.”A staff memo obtained by The Canadian Press, says Velshi and Bergamini are now back in their old roles, while several other high-level positions have been eliminated in a “reorganization” following the Brown debacle. An executive director, two deputy chiefs of staff, a party adviser and a number of junior and mid-level jobs are being slashed, according to the email sent by Velshi on Sunday.“With any change in leadership comes a need for reorganization,” Velshi wrote. “While reorganizations are always difficult, they are also sometimes necessary.”The staffing changes come as a political race takes shape to determine Brown’s successor, who will attempt to lead the Tories to victory in June. The Tory caucus chose Vic Fedeli as its interim leader on Friday, and caucus members had hoped the Nipissing MPP would maintain the leadership role throughout the campaign. But later Friday, the party’s executive voted to hold a leadership race and select a new leader sometime before March.Fedeli told reporters he would be a candidate for the permanent role.Among the other names currently circulating as potential leadership candidates are several Tory members who aren’t part of the legislative caucus. They include Rod Phillips, a former executive at Postmedia and star candidate for the party in Ajax, Ont., as well as Caroline Mulroney and Christine Elliott, who lost to Brown in the 2015 leadership contest.Mulroney, the daughter of former prime minister Brian Mulroney and another PC candidate, greeted the news of a leadership race positively.“Our party is stronger when all of our members across the province have their voices heard about who will lead us into the next election,” she said in a statement on Twitter.Toronto Mayor John Tory and Conservative MP Lisa Raitt, meanwhile, have shot down speculation about their interest in leading the provincial party.Tory broke the news on Twitter Sunday evening, saying he’s had people approach him about seeking the PC leadership.“I have the privilege of being mayor of a city I love, and I hope to continue to do that job,” Tory wrote.Raitt announced earlier that she would not be running.Ottawa-area MPP Lisa MacLeod, who hasn’t said whether she plans to run for the top job, appeared to welcome Dykstra’s resignation Sunday night.“This is good news for taking back our PC party,” MacLeod wrote on Twitter.

Kolkata: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded a thorough investigation into the “theft” of Rafale documents from the office of the Ministry of Defence and stated that it was a matter of serious concern for the whole country.Talking to newsmen on Thursday, she wondered how such an important document could be stolen from the Union Defence ministry. The Centre has not filed any FIR regarding the matter yet. “We demand a thorough inquiry into the same. Such irresponsible act of the government has ashamed us. Where is our country’s safety and security?” she questioned. Also Read – IAF Day: Tributes paid to soldiers killed in line of duty in JammuShe said under such a “callous” government, the country was in deep trouble. “The Centre cannot get away with the statement that somebody has stolen the documents. It is a very serious issue. The quicker this government goes the better it is for this country,” she said. The Chief Minister further added: “Where is our country heading to? The Attorney General is telling before the Supreme Court about the ‘theft’ of documents in the Rafale deal. This has never happened in the past.” Also Read – Shashi Tharoor writes to PM Modi: Don’t let your ‘mann ki baat’ become ‘maun ki baat’Earlier in the day, she tweeted in Hindi and described the incident as ‘tamasha’ (drama) and hinted that its fallout would be known after the Lok Sabha elections. “What drama is going on in the country? Documents are being stolen from the Ministry of Defence itself. This is a very dangerous situation for the country. What is the government’s opinion on this? Who is the main culprit behind this? There must be a probe into this.” She asked the people to “wait for sometime as general election results would come out soon”. Supporting N Ram, chairman of the Hindu Publishing Group, Banerjee said: “We support Ram for exposing this government. I have profound respect for some senior journalists like N Ram, Pranay Roy who can express their views fearlessly. Invoking Official Secrets Act to threaten journalists is a shame.” She further said that now any journalist who was writing against the BJP was abused and heckled. “Look at the national channels in Delhi. BJP has purchased them and they write stories to confuse people. They are run by people whose primary goal is business and publication of news is secondary.” Recollecting her experience as a Central minister, she said: “Arun Shourie who was then with The Indian Express used to file reports exposing the Centre. There were politicians like George Fernandes and Madhu Dandavate who used to raise those issues in Parliament. She reiterated that under the BJP rule, most of the media houses were scared and anyone opposing them would be taken to task. “Such a thing cannot go on for long. It is most unfortunate.”
New Delhi: Under attack from the Congress for its failure to yet again designate JeM chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist, the government fielded Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for its defence who alleged that the original mistake, not only on Kashmir but also on China, was committed by Jawaharlal Nehru. Jaitley’s remarks came soon after the Congress blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign policy vis-a-vis China for the latter yet again blocking the bid to designate Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM)’s chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. Referring to India’s first Prime Minister’s “infamous” letter to chief ministers dated August 2, 1955, the senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said it was Nehru who said India taking China’s place in the United Nation’s Security Council (UNSC) would be “very unfair for a great country like China”. “Will the Congress President tell us who the original sinner was?” he asked. Also Read – SC declines Oil Min request to stay sharing of documents on Reliance penalty Jaitley quoted Nehru as saying in the letter: “Informal suggestions have been made by the United States that China should be taken into the United Nations but not in the Security Council, and that India should take her place in the Security Council. …we cannot, of course, accept this as it means falling out with China and it would be very unfair for a great country like China not to be in the Security Council.” Earlier, with China for the fourth time putting on hold the proposal against Azhar in the UN Security Council, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said it is a major setback for the global fight against terrorism and “reaffirms Chinese position of being an inseparable ally of terrorism’s breeding ground Pakistan”. Blaming Modi, he said: “The present situation also arises out of failure of a weak-kneed Modi government, bending over backwards before China over last 5 years, which has culminated into the present state of things where the Chinese have blocked Masood Azhar’s declaration as an ‘international terrorist’, without any reason and only to please its ally Pakistan.” The Congress asked if Modi would answer why he became “Maun Modi” (silent) as India’s interests are repeatedly being compromised.
