Delta has been a Whittier community leader throughout her married life, working with Whittier Hospital Children’s League, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital and the YMCA to name a few. She served as chairman of the Los Angeles County Planning Commission, chairman of the Whittier Parks and Recreation Commission and on the board of Meals on Wheels. She is currently chairwoman of the Wrigley Marine Science Institute for USC. She also served on the Whittier City Council for 6 1/2 years, two years as mayor. Delta was on the YMCA Board for six years and was a major fundraiser for the new Uptown Y facility. Breene has served as president of the Whittier Dental Society. He is now a counselor on the USC Dental Board. He was one of the original Evening Y’s Men, is a member of the YMCA Board and worked on the Capital Campaign for the new Y facility and renovation of Camp Arbolado. He is one of the five members of the Rose Hills Foundation, a philanthropic organization. Breene is a Whittier native, who says he grew up at the YMCA, becoming a member of Friendly Indians (now Indian Guides) at age 8. Later, their two sons were also Indian Guides. As a young man, Breene went to Camp Arbolado. After high school graduation, he joined the Navy and became a corpsman, serving in Tinian & Saipan for two years. As a member of Alpha Chi Omega at USC, one of Delta’s sorority sisters introduced the award recipient to her brother Breene. They married and settled in Whittier in 1947. In 1952, Breene graduated from USC and began his dental practice in the same office suite as his father’s practice. Breene has been a horseman all of his life, riding with Rancheros Vistadores and the Los Caballeros. WHITTIER – The Myron Claxton Distinguished YMCA Service Award was presented to Delta and Breene Murphy this week at the 91st annual dinner of the YMCA of Greater Whittier at the Radisson Hotel. More than 100 people attended the event Thursday evening. Also honored with Don Jenkins YMCA Volunteer Service Awards were Ardith and Ben Montelius. The Murphys were recognized for outstanding community leadership and service to the Greater Whittier YMCA.
